AI Governance & Program Lead
Help a nonprofit that runs a $9-billion-a-year federal program decide where AI can help, where it must never decide, and what has to be true first — a four-month assessment, a governance rulebook, and a three-year plan. You'd be named on the proposal.
The work
A nonprofit runs a nine-billion-dollar-a-year federal program — the money that connects schools and libraries to the internet, keeps rural clinics online, and helps low-income families afford phone and broadband. It answers to a federal regulator and to the public. It's about to give every employee an AI assistant, and its leadership wants an honest answer before going further: where can AI help, where must it never decide, and what has to be true before we let it near a school's funding or a family's eligibility?
What you'd do, in four months
- Find out where they actually stand — read their policies, interview their people, and score their readiness against the federal government's own yardsticks.
- Write the rulebook: who approves an AI use, what checks must exist before it goes live, how problems escalate, what the Board sees.
- Draw the three-year plan, sequenced by what's safe to do next — not by what vendors are selling.
- Recommend one pilot they can run without betting the mission, and present it to their executive committee.
How this works
We're bidding for this work and would name you in the bid. If we select you, we pay you as a consultant to help shape the bid before we submit it; finalists are paid for the working session. If we win, the job starts in October.
For those who know the standards
The assessment uses the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and OMB Memo M-25-21. Deliverables: current-state assessment, governance framework, three-year roadmap, pilot recommendation, executive readout. You'd be named Key Personnel on the proposal.
What we'd ask of you
- Six or more years in governance, risk, or program management
- You've written assessments executives acted on
- You'll deliver an unwelcome finding with the evidence behind it — and say "not yet" when that's the truth
- Based in the Washington area; able to pass a standard background check; authorized to work in the U.S.
Engagement
Full-time, W-2 on contract award (October) · paid September consulting retainer
Location
Washington, DC · hybrid, about two days a week on-site
Pay
$120,000–$180,000 base, depending on experience, plus a bonus if we win · consulting up to 20 hrs at $125–$175/hr to help shape the bid; finalists paid for the working session · health, dental, vision, paid time off, company laptop
Eligibility
No security clearance required. Based in the Washington, DC area; able to pass a standard commercial background check; authorized to work in the U.S. Veterans and former federal program managers strongly encouraged.
Contingent staffing: Most federal roles are staffed contingent on contract award. A signed commitment letter names you to a specific opportunity — it binds neither of us to employment unless we win. We name only candidates who are genuinely committed, because named key personnel cannot be substituted without the Government's approval.
